Sappi to acquire Rockwell Solutions' barrier film technology

Published 05 July 2017

Sappi has agreed to acquire the barrier film technology of Rockwell Solutions to strengthen its packaging and speciality papers business.

Financial details about the acquisition have not been disclosed. Rockwell Solutions will become a subsidiary of Sappi Europe.

The transaction will not disrupt Rockwell's ongoing business and customers.

Sappi Europe Packaging and Speciality Papers Sales and Marketing Vice President Thomas Kratochwill, said: “By gaining access to the barrier film technology of Rockwell Solutions Sappi will be able to accelerate the development of our own solutions and be able to offer our customers an even wider range of barrier coated packaging solutions.”

Rockwell Solutions chairman Aziz Okhai said: “Rockwell Solutions is a high technology coatings family based producer and would benefit significantly by allying itself to a major player such as Sappi. It can only strengthen the future of all those who work at Rockwell Solutions.”

Recently, at Interpack 2017, the company showcased its new Sappi Guard packaging papers with mineral oil barrier integrated directly into the paper. The paper is also claimed to have heat sealing properties.

This new packaging paper is intended for both inner and outer packaging, with applications ranging from dry foodstuffs such as pasta, rice, cereals, pudding powder, tea and many more products.

It had also introduced white coated liners for corrugated board made from Fusion Topliner virgin fibre line. This new product is claimed to suit corrugated board applications.
